Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion |
Laguna Seca 2011—History in the Making
Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion August 19-21
JJ Carlson, Director of Media Relations NAACC |
“The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is hallowed ground for automotive racing aficionados, and thus a very meaningful place to celebrate the Jaguar E-Type's 50th Anniversary," said Richard Beattie, Executive Vice President Marketing and Sales Jaguar North America. "Today, as much as 50 years ago, hi-performance, racing and stunning design are integral to the Jaguar brand. At the Reunion we will give enthusiasts a chance to take a look back and forward at all three of these elements in Jaguar's sensational cars."
Richard Beattie was right on the mark. The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, held at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, hosted approximately 500 authentic and historic race cars from nearly every decade of motorsports history. The cars were divided into 17 classes according to engine size and age. All of these vehicles were period correct. Some of the Marques represented were Allard, Jaguar, Mercedes, Alfa, Delahey, Studebaker, Ford, Chevrolet and Chrysler. There were literally dozens of vehicles representing the Golden Age of racing from the early 1900’s through the 1970’s. The Titans of Motorsport past and present were there either racing or strolling through the paddock. Colorful figures such as Sr. Stirling Moss, Jay Leno, Don Orasco, Tom and Susan Armstrong, Bill Warner and Derek Bell were seen signing autographs or talking casually with excited spectators. This is an event where under the watchful eye of a parent a young person can get an autograph and have their picture taken with many of the greatest racing personalities in the world.
Now in its 37th year the Motorsports Reunion is truly unique as it allows the spectators to move freely through the paddock giving them the opportunity to visit and interact with the drivers and their racing teams. This is a freedom that is seldom experienced at other racing venues. Jaguar had a magnificent display of vintage period race cars under a huge tent cover. Some of these historic cars were brought from as far Europe. C and D Type Jags were common place. This event gets bigger every year. In my estimation, the ‘Paddock Experience’ is one of the best in all of motorsport if you enjoy vintage racing. The bleachers are open for spectators who want to sit trackside and enjoy the sight and sounds of vehicles at speed. The motoring midway souvenir area has a phenomenal array vintage memorabilia for sale.
The weekend experience at this event is well worth the price of admission.

Jaguar Joins Hundreds of Historic Race Cars
at Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion
August 19-21 Schedule Announced at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca
MONTEREY, Calif., April 26, 2011 — Approximately 550 of the finest examples of automotive history, style, design and technology will fill the race paddock for the 17 race groups at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion August 19-21. Now in its 37th year at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, the historic racing event is a cornerstone of the Monterey Classic Car Week.
The broad range of accepted race cars is impressive. From pre-war machines like the 180-horsepower 1911 Fiat S74, which finished fourth in the 1911 American Grand Prix, to the mighty 1969 Lola T163 Can-Am car that boasts more than 800 horsepower, there will be a variety for fans young and old alike to see and hear.
Historical significance is a hallmark of the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion and is exemplified by such cars as the 1954 Jaguar D-Type. One of the D-Types entered is a works (factory) car that Sir Stirling Moss and Peter Walker co-drove in the 1954 24 Hours of Le Mans and Reims. Another example of a race car with significant provenance is the 1963 Ferrari 250/275P that was driven by John Surtees and Willy Mairesse who finished first overall at the 1963 Nürburgring 1000 Kilometer endurance race.
Each car accepted has its own interesting history, which owners enthusiastically share with fans as they wander through the open race paddock. The task of selecting the cars from more than 800 entry requests is a daunting task for the Governing Committee. Yet, a strict set of criteria guides them and is based on the period correctness of each car, its authenticity and proven provenance. Equally important is that the car has not been mechanically altered from its original race condition.
With Jaguar as the featured marque, there will be a number of noteworthy Jaguars present that represent the automaker through the years. This year is a significant one for Jaguar and its millions of admirers: 2011 marks the 50th anniversary of one of the most iconic automobiles of all time, the Jaguar E-Type. A number of special activities are planned to celebrate the E-Type’s place in history, as well as honoring Jaguar’s many motor racing accomplishments and famous drivers who took the Leaping Cat to victory.
Jaguar’s American racing roots are firmly planted on the Monterey Peninsula. It was in 1950 at the inaugural Pebble Beach Road Races that Jaguar achieved its first win on American soil. A 23-year-old American named Phil Hill, who months earlier accompanied the same Jaguar XK120 aboard the Queen Mary, took the checkered flag, thereby capturing international accolades for both himself and Jaguar.
Tickets, hospitality packages and reservations for general camping for the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion are available by calling 800-327-7322 or available online at www.MazdaRaceway.com.

Monterey Historic’s Gone, Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion Here to Stay
August 13-15, 2010
JJ Carlson - Director of Media Relations
Monterey, Calif. – 2010 would prove to be a pivotal year for the infamous corkscrew wielding Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca because this was the first year under new management by SCRAMP. The Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula has taken the reins and shall continue what has become a tradition for the last three decades. Although the name has been changed to the Rolex Monterey Sports Reunion, the theme and feel are very similar. Moreover, 2010 hosted an unprecedented 600 cars, and 19 race groups featuring those built and raced by Dan Gurney, Trans Am, F1, Grand National Stock Cars and Bugatti Grand Prix.
Conveniently located near the center of the paddock was a long double row of tents covering twenty four of the most notable and famous race cars that Dan Gurney raced throughout his extensive career. “The Gurney Garage” featured the Eagles, Lola T-70, Ford GT-40 and Maserati “Bird Cage”. Dan was at the display in person, signing autographs for eager fans.
It’s common to see pre-war Bugattis’ at Laguna Seca, but not so common to see forty of them, at the same time, winding their way through the corkscrew. This year, about sixty cars showed up with two-thirds able to lap the track. It was the largest gathering of Bugatti race cars that I have ever seen, period.
One very exciting group to watch were the ’63-’66 GT cars over 2500cc. These included: Shelby GT350, Shelby Cobra, and a lone Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe. The GT350’s were particularly impressive. Those small blocks were turning 8500 rpm and just screamed around the track – I want one.
Another exciting group were the FIA Manufactures Championship Cars (’64-’69). Bruce Canepa skillfully piloted his Gulf blue Porsche 917 to win the class. Not every day do you get to see million dollar cars battling it out for bragging rights.
All in all, the Rolex Monterey Sports Reunion had a lot to offer this year. The paddock was absolutely packed with great cars. The sounds, smells and overall experience was simply fantastic, I can’t wait until next year! Hope to see you there in 2011.

01/18/2011 JAGUAR’S RICH RACING HERITAGE TO BE CELEBRATED
AS FEATURED MARQUE AT THE ROLEX MONTEREY MOTORSPORTS REUNION
Reunion to Celebrate 50th Anniversary of Jaguar E-Type and 60th Anniversary of Jaguar's First
Le Mans Win
MONTEREY, Calif. (January 18, 2011) —The storied racing heritage of one of Britain’s
legendary motor car companies will be celebrated, as Jaguar will be the featured marque of the
2011 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. Few companies are as synonymous with sports car
racing as Jaguar, and the reunion will highlight the 50th anniversary of the iconic Jaguar E-Type
and 60th anniversary of the remarkable Jaguar C-Type’s win in the 1951 24 Hours of Le Mans.
“The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is hallowed ground for automotive racing
aficionados, and thus a very meaningful place to celebrate the Jaguar E-Type's 50th
Anniversary," said Richard Beattie, Executive Vice President Marketing and Sales Jaguar North
America. "Today, as much as 50 years ago, hi-performance, racing and stunning design are
integral to the Jaguar brand. At the Reunion we will give enthusiasts a chance to take a look back
and forward at all three of these elements in Jaguar's sensational cars."
The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, August 19-21 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, will
host approximately 550 authentic and historic race cars from nearly every decade of motorsports
history. The cars are divided into 17 groups according to age, engine size and must be period-
correct in their presentation.
“Jaguar and their many famous drivers represent a time in motorsports where camaraderie
among drivers and works teams was second only to winning,” explained Gill Campbell, CEO/
general manager for Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. “We look to share Jaguar’s heritage with
fans worldwide. And for the E-Type, it’s hard to argue with what Enzo Ferrari said 50 years
ago upon seeing the sleek E-Type at its introduction, saying it is, ‘The most beautiful car ever
made.’”
For Sir William Lyons, founder of Swallow Sidecar and Coach Building Company which
evolved into Jaguar, winning Le Mans was a crucial goal to demonstrate to the world the
robustness and performance of the XK120-C. Malcolm Sayer’s aerodynamic, lightweight
design was based on his aviation background with wind tunnel testing. The C designation stood
for “competition.”
Three factory C-Types were entered in the 1951 24 Hours of Le Mans with stunning results. A
22-year-old Stirling Moss recorded the fastest lap, and Peter Walker and Peter Whitehead won
the race. It was the first of seven Le Mans victories for Jaguar.
Jaguar’s American racing roots are firmly planted on the Monterey Peninsula. It was in 1950
at the inaugural Pebble Beach Road Races that Jaguar achieved its first win on American soil.
A 23-year-old American named Phil Hill, who months earlier accompanied the same Jaguar
XK120 aboard the Queen Mary, took the checkered flag, thereby capturing international
accolades for both himself and Jaguar.
This is the third time Jaguar has been the featured marque, having been honored in 1976 and
1992 at the previously named Monterey Historic Automobile Races®.

The Can-Am series was known for being on the cutting-edge of racing with minimal regulations, permitting unlimited engine sizes with virtually unrestricted aerodynamics. Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca hosted the series from 1966 – 1973 and the Chaparrals (won in 1966) and McLarens (four wins) that dominated the races at the track will once again thunder down the Corkscrew.
The FIA 3-Liter Formula 1 cars from 1966 – 1983 featured race include cars such as Mario Andretti’s Lotus 79, which helped him win the 1978 world championship. Also in this group is the Tyrrell 006 that Jackie Stewart won his third and last world championship in along with the Lotus 49B driven by Jimmy Clark and Graham Hill. The 49B was the first successful Formula 1 car to feature the engine as a structural member.

Each entry request is subject to intense scrutinizing to ensure the car is authentic, has proven provenance and has not been mechanically altered from its original race condition.

NEW LOGO FOR A NEW ERA
For the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion |
MONTEREY, Calif., June 3, 2010 Officials at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca unveiled a new logo for the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion that reflects the pedigree, spirit and history of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca’s signature turn The Corkscrew.
The tree in the logo is taken from a photo of the actual oak tree at The Corkscrew. It’s the exact oak tree that drivers’ drove under before the turn down The Corkscrew. The oak is still alive and well but was moved a few feet to the drivers’ left to accommodate the track modifications for the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix.
The curbing in the logo represents The Corkscrew curbing. Both the oak tree and the curbing are the same landmarks that legends Jimmy Clark, Sir Jackie Stewart, Dan Gurney, Sir Stirling Moss, Phil Hill, Wayne Rainey and Kenny Roberts Sr. have used for racing at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is honoring one of the true legends of motorsports Dan Gurney, the Cars he raced and the Cars he built, such as the famous Eagle race cars. Among the 19 race groups competing at the event will be a dedicated grid of 40 Bugatti race cars in the Bugatti Grand Prix, and featured races for Stock Cars with drum brakes, Trans-Am, and Formula 1 race cars that competed between 1966 and 1983.
For Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion tickets and information, and to learn about the Pre-Reunion scheduled August 7 and 8, please visit www.MazdaRaceway.com or call 800-327-7322.
