A car guy since his Dad let him drive the ’51 Meteor in the country when he was only 14, Gord’s life has been centered around cars.
As president of the Timers Car Club for 7 years starting 1965 he built a Model A Tudor street rod that saw some drag race duty, teamed up with a couple of buddies to race a dragster, customized a few ’58 Chevys and got the club into their own building. Gord also guided the club through many years of custom car shows held in the Winnipeg Arena.
Gord ran DragMart Speed Shop for 11 years during which time he belonged to SEMA and supported their efforts. He also became involved with local vehicle legislation out of concern for the hobby, consulting for the Manitoba Street Rod Association starting in the late 60s and hasn’t stopped yet. Gord has been instrumental in helping to shape the Specialty Vehicle Regulations of Manitoba over the years.
Gord started doing vehicle appraisals in the 70s when the provincial insurance corporation used them and still does them occasionally for concerned owners.
Gord bought what is considered Canada’s most famous and successful Funny Car from Ron Hodgson (Gord Jenner & Gordie Bonin – Pacemaker FC) out of Edmonton, and raced it in Manitoba as a BB/FC. The Model A (Altered) was quite successful, eventually becoming the Modified Points Winner at Bison Dragways in what was to be the last year of Bison Dragways operation, 1975.
Gord’s current involvement (2005) with car clubs includes:
Safety/Legislation Chairperson Manitoba Street Rod Association
Newsletter Editor Manitoba Street Rod Association
MAAC Representative Manitoba Street Rod Association
Car Show Vendor Booth Manager Manitoba Street Rod Association
Secretary Manitoba Assn of Automobile Clubs (MAAC)
Safety/Legislation Chairperson MAAC
Gord’s current car toy is a 1937 Pontiac street rod powered by a Cdn Pontiac 358 (350 SBC)/TH350 with 17” Torque Thrusts on lowered spindles on air bags. The car was voted by MSRA members to be the MSRA Street Rod of the Year for 2003. See more of Gord’s history and his Pontiac at http://members.shaw.ca/gordforman/index.htm
When Gord isn’t windsurfing or golfing he is driving around in his Pontiac looking for more car guys to talk to. When in Manitoba, catch him and get him talkin’!
